Native Trees

Native trees & species diversity are important

While not all non-native tree species are invasive, promoting native tree species has many benefits. These include habitat for wildlife, adaptation to local climate conditions, and incredible species diversity. Many non-native species that are planted are cultivars (a tree selectively bred for certain characteristics) and do not have the genetic diversity of native species. This is particularly important for resistance to pests and pathogens. Check out the videos above to learn about some of our native tree species, and where they can be found around Chatham County.

Looking to acquire some natives of your own? While some nurseries do carry a selection of native species, Savannah Tree Foundation seeks to provide access to native trees through biannual tree giveaways. Keep an eye on our calendar for upcoming tree giveaways and sales!
